Special Edition with Ellen Lesperance

In this special edition of the «Art & Care» Writing Café, we explore the parallels between words and yarns. We examine textile activities such as knitting and stitching in the context of resistance, tradition and solidarity. Communities all over the world – above all women – have been knitting, stitching, weaving and quilting for centuries to communicate, pass on knowledge, protest and remember, for example through the arpilleras in Chile or the tatreez of the Palestinians. Writing is (also) a craft. Together, we write whilst stitching, and stitch whilst writing. We are preparing a collective stitching project and will offer a short introduction. This will be followed by a conversation with the artist Ellen Lesperance. She is our guest at the Schreibcafé to talk about her first monograph. Her work focuses on knitting patterns and women’s activism as a tribute to the protestors’ creative resilience at the Greenham Common Peace Camp (UK).
